PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSES 1-2 – PART 1

“Alif, Lām, Meem. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verses 1-2.

The first part of the second verse can mean that this revelation is undoubtedly from Allah, the Exalted, and whoever sincerely believes and acts on it will be guided by Allah, the Exalted, to achieve success in both worlds. But whoever turns away will never find true guidance. There is no doubt in the origin of this revelation as it has been foretold in all the previous divine scriptures which the scholars of the previous communities full well know. Chapter 6 Al An’am, verse 20:

“Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize it as they recognize their [own] sons…”

This is linked to another verse which declares that the scholars of the former communities recognize the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, as the final Messenger of Allah, the Exalted, as his characteristics have been clearly explained in the previous divine scriptures. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 146:

“Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (SAW)] as they know their own sons…”

From this one can understand the importance of accepting the truth in both matters of the world and religion, even if it contradicts one’s desires. It is against the character of a true Muslim to reject the truth in order to appear superior to others. In fact, this is a sign of pride which must be avoided at all costs as only an atom’s worth of pride is needed to take a person to Hell. This has been confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 265. A Muslim should accept anything that is truthful even if it is presented to them by a child.

In addition, there is no doubt in the Holy Quran as there is no statement in it which is not supported by clear evidence. It is not a book of theory; it is a book of truth. In fact, all statements have practical implications, meaning it is not like poetry which might sound lovely yet has little or no practical implications. Neither are its statements like those which come from most motivational speakers who wrap up concepts which cannot be applied into a person’s life, with beautiful words and phrases.

It is vital for muslims to obtain knowledge and act on the teachings of the Holy Quran according to the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, so that they can obtain certainty of faith, which is free from all doubts. So the first part of verse 2 is an indication to muslims to obtain and act on knowledge so that they reach this level of certainty which is free of all doubts. Acting on knowledge will encourage one to sincerely obey Allah, the Exalted, by fulfilling His commands, refraining from His prohibitions and by facing destiny with patience. This is the one who is rightly guided and righteous as indicated by the end of verse 2. Those who seek knowledge without acting on it will not become righteous therefore; the Holy Quran will not guide them. Neither will it guide those who choose ignorance over obtaining and acting on beneficial knowledge. Is it possible to journey on a path one is unaware of? Chapter 17 Al Isra, verse 82:

“And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.”

It is important to note, the righteous do not misinterpret knowledge in order to suit their own desires nor do they cherry pick what they should follow or ignore. This type of person will be left in darkness even if they study the Holy Quran day and night as their intention is corrupt. It has been made clear in a Hadith found in Sahih Bukhari, number 1, that all are judged based on their intentions. If a person’s intention is bad they cannot be righteous and only the righteous will be rightly guided by the Holy Quran.
