PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 4 – PART 1

“And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 4.

This verse continues mentioning the characteristics required to achieve righteousness which is needed to obtain right guidance from the Holy Quran. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 2:

“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”

Verse 4 teaches muslims that a part of faith is to not only believe in the Holy Quran but to also believe in all the divine books and scriptures which Allah, the Exalted, revealed to the other Holy Prophets, peace be upon them. The important difference is that the Holy Quran will be protected from alterations whereas the other divine books and scriptures have either been lost to humanity or they have been altered by people. Chapter 15 Al Hijr, verse 9:

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.”

This verse also alludes to the importance of believing in all the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, as they are the group who received divine revelation. A muslim must believe in all of them and the divine revelations they were blessed with. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 285:

“…All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.”

It is important to note, that the proof of this belief is acting on the teachings of the Holy Quran and traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. One is highly unlikely to succeed if they simply claim to believe without supporting it with sincere physical actions.

The last part of this verse includes all aspects of the hereafter such as the Resurrection, the Scales, the Bridge, Hell, and Paradise. This part of the verse reminds mankind that they have not been created pointlessly. They have a purpose and will be held accountable regarding it. Chapter 51 Adh Dhariyat, verse 56:

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”

This verse also reminds muslims that the material world is temporary and life in it is fleeting. All will eventually reach the hereafter in order to be judged and dispatched towards their eternal abode: Hell or Paradise. So a muslim should therefore, prepare for it by adopting righteousness so that they become rightly guided. It is a sign of weakness in faith when a muslim believes in the hereafter yet, fails to prepare for it.
