PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 5

“Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 5.

This verse refers to the muslims who believe in the things mentioned in the previous two verses. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verses 3-4:

“Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what Wehave provided for them. And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].”

These rightly guided muslims prove their belief by practically implementing the teachings of Islam. They fulfil the commands of Allah, the Exalted, refrain from His prohibitions and face the unseen namely, destiny with patience. This right guidance is a blessing which affects every aspect of one’s life. It allows a muslim to successfully journey through all obstacles they encounter in worldly and religious matters. It will guide them down the straight path mentioned in the previous chapter Al Fatihah, verses 6-7:

“Guide us to the straight path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor…”

This right guidance is true success as it begins in this world and leads to Paradise in the next. All worldly success is temporal and will eventually become a burden for a person. One only needs to observe the rich and famous to understand this truth. But it is important to note, this guidance will only benefit a muslim when they practically implement the teachings of Islam. A person cannot simply accept Islam verbally without supporting it with actions and expect to achieve this true success.

In addition, verse 5 reminds muslims that true guidance is granted by none other than Allah, the Exalted. Therefore, they should submit to Him with humility and avoid pride. Pride only belongs to Allah, the Exalted, and whoever attempts to compete with Him for it will be hurled into Hell. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sunan Abu Dawud, number 4090. A muslim should therefore show gratitude for this right guidance by using all the blessings they were granted in ways pleasing to Allah, the Exalted.

Finally, this verse indicates that those who claim to be on right guidance yet reject Islam will be disappointed on Judgment Day. As Allah, the Exalted, will not accept any faith which is not based on the characteristics mentioned in the previous verses of this chapter, which were quoted earlier, namely Islam. Chapter 3 Alee Imran, verse 85:

“And whoever desires other than Islām as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.”
