PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSES 6-7

“Indeed, those who disbelieve – it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them – they will not believe. Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verses 6-7.

Even though, these verses discuss those who disbelieve in Islam yet, muslims can learn lessons from them. First of all, muslims should not behave like those who do not believe in the hereafter by remaining heedless to it. This heedlessness prevents them from preparing for it through performing righteous deeds and refraining from sins. Muslims should not dedicate the majority of their efforts to the material temporal world thereby mimicking those who do not believe in the hereafter. Instead, muslims should demonstrate their inward belief of the hereafter by prioritising preparing for it over striving for the aspect of the material world which goes beyond their needs and responsibilities.

In addition, it is important that a person does not adopt a stubborn mentality as this will prevent any good advice penetrating their heart. An open mind is required before a person can accept and submit to the truth in both religious and worldly matters. One should not adopt the mentality of some who make their minds up beforehand about a matter and then search for evidence to support their belief. If they cannot find any evidence they simply intentionally misinterpret information in order to fit their pre-determined ideals. This was the attitude of many of the non-muslims of Mecca who pre-determined their ideals and only debated with the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, for the sake of argument. Chapter 43 Az Zukhruf, verse 58:

“…They did not present it [i.e., the comparison] except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.”

Verse 7 indicates how Allah, the Exalted, covered the hearts of some of the non-muslims of Mecca as they adopted this type of argumentative mentality. A muslim should not behave as if they already possess all the answers as this only leads to this bias mentality. This attitude also leads to pride which befits only Allah, the Exalted. As warned in a Hadith found in Sunan Abu Dawud, number 4090, whoever competes with Allah, the Exalted, for pride will be thrown into Hell on Judgement Day.

A muslim should therefore adopt an open mind and accept the truth when it is supported by strong evidence even if it is from someone they dislike. This applies to both worldly and religious matters.
