“In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 10.
This verse warns people that if they act on the characteristics of hypocrisy they will find themselves sinking deeper into sins until they encounter an unexpected punishment. They may falsely believe their attitude leads to success but in reality whatever worldly thing they obtain only becomes a curse for them. This is like the one who is travelling on the wrong path and when they ignore the warnings to change direction they only travel further away from their desired destination. The more one remains steadfast on the aspects of hypocrisy the further they will stray from finding true peace in both this world and the next.
In addition, this verse indicates that a person will only improve and change for the better when they struggle for it. If they simply remain heedless and expect Allah, the Exalted, to change them without any effort from their side they will find that their evil traits only leads them to further darkness in both worlds. This has been warned in chapter 13 Ar Ra’d, verse 11:
“…Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves…”
