“And when it is said to them, “Believe as the people have believed,” they say, “Should we believe as the foolish have believed?” Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 13.
This verse highlights the dangers of ignorance and heedlessness. These types of people are so lost in the material world that when they observe those who strive in the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, and refrain from the excess and luxuries of the material world for the sake of preparing for the eternal hereafter they call them foolish and ignorant. As their minds are completely focused on gathering and hoarding the material world they believe anyone who does not do the same is simply foolish. But in reality, as declared by this verse, they are the foolish ones as a time will certainly come when the veil of ignorance blocking their perception of the truth is lifted. When it is lifted they will finally understand that those who they believed were foolish were the intelligent ones as they have reached the hereafter safely.
In some cases, this veil is removed during one’s life on Earth which gives them an opportunity to change for the better. But in most cases, this veil is lifted at the time of death and more vividly on the Day of Judgment. But by this time it is too late to change for the better. The heedless have reached their graves unprepared and the grief of this realization is beyond words to describe.
Therefore, muslims must prioritize preparing for the hereafter over gaining the material world. They should assess their daily schedule and see how much time they dedicate to the hereafter and if necessary adjust their schedule so that they reach the hereafter safely instead of reaching it empty handed.
