PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSES 18-19

“Deaf, dumb and blind – so they will not return [to the right path]. Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verses 18-19.

As discussed in detail in the previous blog, when a person does not gain or act on useful knowledge they behave as those who do not possess the ability to gain and act on knowledge. A person who has the ability to see yet does not use this blessing in the correct way is equivalent to a blind person. This has been indicated in verse 18. Those who refuse to use the knowledge they have been granted will not find the correct path. They will not observe the right path nor will hearing useful knowledge benefit them nor will their knowledge benefit them in their speech. This is like the one who has been described in a Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 2314. This type of person utters a word without understanding its consequences and as a result will plunge into Hell on Judgement Day.

Muslims should not adopt the behaviour of the misguided by ignoring the glad tidings and warnings which are given to them by Islam. Ignorance is not bliss as ignoring the truth will not change it.  A muslim should not act as if they will never die and face the elements of the hereafter, such as Judgement Day, as this attitude will not alter the truth. The will of Allah, the Exalted, will occur and every person will face these things, sooner or later. Therefore, an intelligent muslim will take the necessary steps to prepare for them by acting on the teachings of Islam instead of ignoring them. A person’s real mentality is reflected in their actions meaning, if a muslim dedicates the majority of their day to accumulating the excess and unnecessary elements of the material world then they are behaving like those described in these verses. But if a muslim takes what they need from this material world in order to fulfil their necessities and responsibilities according to the teachings of Islam and then dedicates the rest of their efforts to preparing for the hereafter then they will achieve success in both worlds.
