PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSES 23-24 – PART 1

“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down [i.e., the Qurān] upon Our Servant [i.e., Prophet Muhammad (SAW)], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses [i.e., supporters] other than Allah, if you should be truthful. But if you do not – and you will never be able to – then fear the Fire…” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verses 23-24.

Verse 23 reminds muslims that the commands, advice and decree of Allah, the Exalted, are always the best for His servants. A muslim only needs to reflect on the many occasions when they have desired something only to have regrets after it was obtained. And the many cases when they disliked something only to change their mind after. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 216:

“…But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.”

As there is no command or advice more beneficial than those found within the Holy Quran muslims must put aside other opinions and choices and sincerely strive to act on its teachings.

As the Holy Quran is unchallengeable muslims must adhere to its teachings according to the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him, and not seek guidance and success, whether worldly or religious, elsewhere. This does not mean muslims should not study other teachings but it means they should do so according to the guidance given in the Holy Quran. This will ensure no knowledge they obtain misguides them. Any knowledge obtained should be assessed against the Holy Quran. If it is acceptable according to its teachings it can be acted on but any knowledge which contradicts its teachings should be rejected. This will ensure success in both worldly and religious matters.

These verses also indicate the importance of following the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, over the actions of anyone else. As muslims do not doubt the Holy Quran being the word of Allah, the Exalted, and it being revealed to none other than the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, they should therefore follow his traditions as he is divinely guided. No other person can claim this type of right guidance after him. The failure to adhere to the teachings of the Holy Quran according to the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, leads only to suffering which is warned in verse 24.
