PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 26

“Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example – that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, “What did Allah intend by this as an example?” He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 26.

This verse discusses the different types of mentalities people possess in respect to assessing knowledge. The correct mentality is when one opens their mind to accepting knowledge which is supported by strong evidence. When it is presented to them they accept it irrespective of who is presenting it to them. In reality, accepting or rejecting truthful knowledge according to who is presenting the knowledge is a sign of pride. The worse mentality is when a person makes up their mind beforehand about a particular issue according to their own desires and then searches for bits of inaccurate information in order to support their pre-determined opinion. This person will not be guided correctly until they change their mentality.

The end of this verse makes it clear that the one who struggles in the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, by fulfilling His commands, refraining from His prohibitions and by facing destiny with patience will be guided correctly by Allah, the Exalted. Chapter 29 Al Ankabut, verse 69:

“And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways…”
