PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 29

It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 29.

A muslim should remember that worldly blessings were created in order to assist them reach the hereafter safely. And people were created in order to obey and worship Allah, the Exalted, by fulfilling His commands, refraining from His prohibitions and by facing destiny with patience. Chapter 51 Adh Dhariyat, verse 56:

”And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”

A muslim should never mix this truth up and behave as if they were created for the material world and worldly blessings were created for people to gather, hoard and enjoy. Countries often grant people work Visas so that they can earn wealth and take it back to their real and permanent home. Similarly, a muslim has been sent to this Earth on a temporary Visa and their duty is to use worldly blessings in the correct way according to the teachings of Islam. This will allow them to enjoy the lawful pleasures of the material world within limits while prioritising gaining righteous deeds in order to take them back to their permanent home namely, the hereafter.

In addition, as Allah, the Exalted, knows all things a muslim should not live in heedlessness and instead constantly remember that they will be held accountable for every one of their actions on Judgement Day by Allah, the Exalted. This will encourage them to sincerely obey Allah, the Exalted, as outlined earlier.

This verse also indicates that Allah, the Exalted, knows the outcome of all things whereas people do not. So it is best to trust in His choices even if a person does not see the wisdoms behind them. How can a muslim prefer their choice when they are ignorant and not prefer the decision of Allah, the Exalted, when He is All-Knowing? This is truly astounding.

As Allah, the Exalted, is All-Knowing He is the only One who can rightly guide people to what is good for them in both worlds. Therefore, it makes no sense to disobey Him as this will only lead to ignorant choices which will lead to suffering in both worlds. This knowledge should be gained and acted upon from the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.
