PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 33

He said, “O Adam, inform them of their names.” And when he had informed them of their names, He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 33.

A muslim should remember from this verse that Allah, the Exalted, is fully aware of their open and hidden actions what they reveal through their tongue and what they conceal in their hearts. Therefore, a muslim should not perform actions in secret which they will be embarrassed to do in public as there is no difference to Allah, the Exalted. Nor should they act in a way which contradicts their inner feeling namely, their intention. Each person will be rewarded based on their intention not just their physical action. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Bukhari, number 1. A muslim should therefore ensure every righteous deed they perform is sincerely for the pleasure of Allah, the Exalted, otherwise they will find that on Judgment Day they will be told to gain their reward from those who they acted for, which will not be possible. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 3154.

In addition, it is important to remember that a good deed can become bad because of an evil intention, such as showing off. But an evil deed can never become good because of an intention, such as stealing in order to give charity.

Finally, a muslim must understand that even worldly deeds can become good deeds because of a good intention. For example, if a muslim strives to earn lawful wealth, which is commanded in Islam, in order to provide for the necessities of their family then it will be recorded as a good deed as they are fulfilling the commands of Allah, the Exalted. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sunan An Nasai, number 2546. Correcting one’s intention is the foundation of Islam as without it no righteous deed will be rewarded on Judgment Day. Therefore, muslims should gain the necessary knowledge in order to correct their intention so every lawful action, whether worldly or religious, becomes a righteous deed which will benefit them in both worlds.
