PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 34 – PART 2 OF 2

“And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam”; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 34.

This verse also reminds muslims that they should not follow in the footsteps of the Devil by rejecting the commands of Allah, the Exalted, least they end up with him in the next world. If one desires the company of the righteous servants of Allah, the Exalted, such as the Angels, they should follow in their footsteps and humbly submit to all the commands and choices of Allah, the Exalted.

In addition, it is important to understand from this verse that a muslim is the one who has submitted to the obedience of Allah, the Exalted. Therefore, they should not apply their own thinking to the commands and choices of Allah, the Exalted, as this was the mistake of the Devil. Muslims should instead live up to their title and submit in obedience to the commands and choices of Allah, the Exalted, without question especially, in cases of difficulties and trials. It is why the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, warned muslims in a Hadith found in Sunan Ibn Majah, number 79, that one should not question the choices of Allah, the Exalted, as this can open the door to the Devil. The Devil will use this attitude to cause one to become impatient instead of trusting in the wise choice of Allah, the Exalted. Muslims are free to use their own thinking in cases beyond the obligatory duties, those things mentioned in the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and destiny. Questioning these things causes a person to fail in fulfilling the duty of being a muslim meaning, the one who has sincerely submitted in obedience to Allah, the Exalted. This is what the Devil did and it is quite obvious even to an uneducated muslim where the Devil is heading in the hereafter. Muslims have been granted the choice to either submit correctly to the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, and end up with His righteous servants, such as the Angels, who did the same or reject His commands by following in the footsteps of the Devil and end up with him in the next world.
