PODNEWS: CHOOSE YOUR HAPPINESS

I read a news article a while ago which I wanted to briefly discuss. It reported on how people’s decisions affect others, such as their family. It is important for muslims to understand an important lesson. In cases where the choices they must choose from are lawful and it does not contradict the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon, meaning, the choice avoids waste, extravagance and excessiveness, they should choose the thing which makes them happy. Even though many people, especially members of the Asian community, always advocate self-sacrifice for the sake of others this is not always the best path especially, in the long run. If a person chooses a decision for the sake of others even though it is not the one which will make them happy it will only lead to their sadness. When a person becomes like this they often fail to fulfil their duties in respect to Allah, the Exalted, and to the creation especially, if their sadness becomes grief or depression. This can lead to impatience and being unhappy at what Allah, the Exalted, chooses for them namely, destiny. This attitude only leads to further problems. This person in effect is no longer useful to themself or others. This grief can often increase when the people they aimed to please by their self-sacrifice do not show gratitude to them. Choosing the lawful path which pleases oneself in some cases is better than choosing another path for the sake of others as it leads to one’s own happiness. A happy person is more likely to fulfil their duties to Allah, the Exalted, and to people. They are more likely to be grateful to Allah, the Exalted, which involves using the blessings they possess correctly. This leads to further blessings. Chapter 14 Ibrahim, verse 7:

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]…”

This person will benefit themself and others through their positive attitude. Putting oneself first before other people has been indicated in the Holy Quran in many places. For example, chapter 14 Ibrahim, verse 41:

“Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.”

And chapter 66 At Tahrim, verse 6:

“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire…”

Simply put, a person who cannot help themself will not benefit and fulfil the rights of others. This is most likely to occur when people choose a path which might please others but not themself. But when one chooses a lawful path which pleases themself their positive mind-set will allow them to benefit themself and fulfil the rights of others.
