PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 38 – PART 1

“We said, “Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance – there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 38.

This verse supports the discussion in the last blog which mentioned the importance of sincerely striving in the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, by fulfilling His commands, refraining from His prohibitions and by facing destiny with patience. This verse clearly indicates that those who adopt this correct mentality and genuinely struggle to act on the teachings of Islam, even if they make mistakes along the way, will be granted salvation. It is important to note, this success is not only restricted to the hereafter but it in fact includes success in this world also. Those who adhere to the teachings of Islam will encounter difficulties throughout their lives as this is guaranteed but through their obedience Allah, the Exalted, will remove fear and grief from them so that they remain firm and steadfast on the correct path. This is similar to the one who only feels slight discomfort from a medical procedure as they have been anaesthetised.

This verse also clearly advises that right guidance cannot be achieved without obeying Allah, the Exalted. This is received either directly, which is granted to the Holy Prophets, peace be upon him, or indirectly which is obtained through the Holy Prophets, peace be upon him. This again reminds muslims that there is no path to the pleasure of Allah, the Exalted, and success in both worlds except for the path of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Chapter 3 Alee Imran, verse 31:

“Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins…”

Whoever returns to Allah, the Exalted, on Judgment Day using any other path than his will be turned away from the proximity of Allah, the Exalted. Chapter 3 Alee Imran, verse 85:

“And whoever desires other than Islam as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.”

Therefore, muslims must not only declare the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, as their guide but they should prove it through their actions by learning and acting on the teachings of Islam.
