PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 49 – PART 1

“And [recall] when We saved you [i.e., your forefathers] from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 49.

This verse reminds muslims of the many times they faced difficulties and troubles and how Allah, the Exalted, rescued them from it. If a muslim sincerely reflects on their deeds and the countless blessings of Allah, the Exalted, they constantly receive they will undoubtedly recognise that even though they disobey Allah, the Exalted, and commit sins yet, Allah, the Exalted, still rescues them, forgives them and continues providing them with blessings. Pondering deeply over this fact is an excellent way to adopt true modesty of Allah, the Exalted. As a person who truly recognises the mercy of Allah, the Exalted, will be too ashamed of misusing the blessings He has provided them. This person will guard every organ of their body and every blessing they possess so that they only utilize them in the obedience of Allah, the Exalted. This has been indicated as true modesty of Allah, the Exalted, in a Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 2458.

In addition, this verse also reminds muslims to reflect on the righteous predecessors who were subjected to greater tests and difficulties than them and how they overcame them with patience and continued obeying Allah, the Exalted. This is important to do especially in times of difficulty as it reduces the significance of one’s own difficulty and reminds muslims that those who were more beloved to  Allah, the Exalted, were tested more than them. In fact, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has advised in a Hadith found in Sunan Ibn Majah, number 4023, that the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, were tested the most even though they are the most beloved group to Allah, the Exalted. When one reflects on this it inspires them to follow in their footsteps and remain patient for the sake of Allah, the Exalted.
