“…Then you took [for worship] the calf after him [i.e., his departure], while you were wrongdoers.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 51.
This verse also teaches muslims not to follow in the footsteps of the past nations who turned away from the teachings of their Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, after they departed from this world. Unfortunately, many muslims have failed to act on this important principle and as a result they have given priority to the actions of other people over the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Even though, the majority of the people they follow were righteous and even the deeds they performed were good but none the less no deed with the exception of the obligatory deeds are greater than the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, as Allah, the Exalted, has appointed the actions and advice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, as an example for muslims to follow. Chapter 33 Al Ahzab, verse 21:
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.”
Whoever chooses the voluntary righteous deeds of someone else over the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is one step closer to misguidance. And the truth is that the more one acts on other deeds the more they will abandon the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. If one persists on this they will undoubtedly become misguided. Even though, all are not agreed on this yet, some scholars have even warned that Allah, the Exalted, will not accept voluntary deeds until a muslim acts on the established traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, just like He will not accept any voluntary deed until the obligatory deeds are not fulfilled first. A hierarchy of actions has been set by Allah, the Exalted, through the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and whoever desires right guidance and ultimate success in both worlds must stick to it without cherry picking actions according to their desires or rearranging this hierarchy.
