PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 55

And [recall] when you said, “O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah outright”; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 55.

This verse indicates the importance of trusting in Allah, the Exalted, and what He has guaranteed. Unfortunately, some muslims have adopted the attitude mentioned in this verse by claiming they will only be patient and obedient to Allah, the Exalted, when they understand the wisdoms behind the things which occur in their life, such as difficulties and tests. First of all, if a person witnessed the wisdoms behind every situation then the concept of faith and trust in Allah, the Exalted, would become meaningless as they have observed the full reality and truth. Just like if a person observed Allah, the Exalted, in this world faith would become meaningless as faith is to believe in something which is beyond the understanding and perception of the five senses.

In addition, it is strange how people accept certain things without understanding the concept behind them yet challenge destiny and refuse to adopt patience just because they do not observe the wisdom behind it. For example, countless people take bitter medicine prescribed to them by a doctor who is not free from making mistakes. They take the medicine even though they do not understand its mechanism of action within the body and even though being cured is not guaranteed. Whereas, the promise of  Allah, the Exalted, regarding destiny and what is best for a muslim is guaranteed. For example, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, guaranteed reward for a believer in every situation, whether they face ease or difficulty, as long as they show the appropriate behaviour in each case namely, patience in difficulty and gratitude in times of ease. This has been confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 7500. A muslim will trust an imperfect doctor and a medicine which might not work over Allah, the Exalted, whose promise is unbreakable. This is truly strange.

The verse concludes by warning muslims that this attitude will not end well for them as it will only lead to the loss of reward through impatience and a great regret in both worlds.
