PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2  – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 56 – PART 2

“Then We revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah 56.

This verse reminds muslims that whenever they face any difficulty or test and through the mercy of Allah, the Exalted, overcome and move past it, they should always acknowledge that the strength, knowledge and inspiration to maintain patience throughout the test was granted to them by none other than Allah, the Exalted. This prevents pride in one’s actions and behaviour. Only an atom’s worth of pride is needed to take one to Hell according to a Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 267. Instead, a muslim should act on this verse by adopting true gratitude by acknowledging the mercy of Allah, the Exalted, in their hearts, praising Him in their speech and using the blessings He has provided them, such as good health after the difficulty of sickness, in the correct way according to teachings of Islam. This is true gratitude and leads to an increase in blessings. Chapter 14 Ibrahim, verse 7:

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]…”

These second chances a muslim is given is in reality a new life which is mentioned in this verse. So muslims should take advantage of these opportunities by adopting sincere obedience to Allah, the Exalted, by fulfilling His commands, refraining from His prohibitions and by facing destiny with patience. An important aspect of this sincere obedience is true gratitude.
