PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 57 – PART 3

“…Eat from the good things with which We have provided you.” And they wronged Us not – but they were [only] wronging themselves.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 57.

This verse is also an indication of infinite mercy of Allah, the Exalted. Whenever a muslim bears this verse in mind and eats they will obtain reward for obeying this verse even though outwardly eating appears to be a worldly action not connected to faith. From this a muslim can understand the importance of intention. The foundation of reward is one’s intention which has been advised in a Hadith found in Sahih Bukhari, number 1. Therefore, a muslim can obtain reward from other worldly actions, similar to eating, as long as they possess a genuine intention to please Allah, the Exalted. The proof of having a genuine intention is when one follows the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. This will ensure constant obedience to Allah, the Exalted.

Verse 57 also indicates the importance of not following one’s own desires but instead to follow the commands of Allah, the Exalted. Even though this part of the verse discusses food this concept of accepting the lawful and unlawful as Allah, the Exalted, has commanded can be applied to all things. This is true obedience and submission to Allah, the Exalted. It is important to note, that abstaining from lawful things in itself is not a righteous deed. But if one does it with a good intention then it does become a righteous deed. For example, if one abstains from lawful things in order to reduce their accountability on the Day of Judgment or if they do this in order to discipline themselves so they adhere more strictly to the obedience of Allah, the Exalted.

Verse 57 concludes by reminding muslims of an extremely important lesson. That each command and prohibition of Allah, the Exalted, do not benefit him which is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 6572. These laws only benefit the creation in both this world and the next as they guide them to what is beneficial for them. Allah, the Exalted, only prohibited the things which harm a person physically or spiritually. For example, alcohol has been prohibited by Allah, the Exalted, only because it causes and leads to countless physical and mental disorders and other sins. It is why in one Hadith found in Sunan An Nasai, number 5670, it has been labelled the mother of evils. So a muslim should firmly understand and believe that the commands and prohibitions of Islam were not formed to burden and make their life difficult. In reality, they have been formed in order to guide a muslim away from dangers which will harm their body and soul. One’s obedience to Allah, the Exalted, will ultimately lead them to Paradise which is an abode which does not benefit Allah, the Exalted, in anyway. And their obedience will take them away from Hell which is an abode which does not harm Allah, the Exalted, in anyway. So one should never complain and instead thank Allah, the Exalted, for this guidance. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 185:

“…Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship…”
