PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 58 – PART 8 OF 8

“And [recall] when We said, “Enter this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will in [ease and] abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly and say, ‘Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins].’ We will [then] forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward].” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 58.

To conclude, this verse is similar to the previous one which was discussed in the last few blogs. A muslim should realise that Islam is a simple religion which is in fact the most beloved religion to Allah, the Exalted. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Imam Bukhari’s, Adab Al Mufrad, number 287. Muslims are free to utilize the lawful things without extravagance or waste. This mentality will aid them in their obedience to Allah, the Exalted, which involves fulfilling His commands, refraining from His prohibitions and facing destiny with patience.

Bowing humbly refers to submitting completely to the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, as bowing is a sign of one’s submission. This indicates that muslims should not cherry pick the duties they desire to fulfil and abandon those which contradict their desires.  This attitude contradicts true servant hood to Allah, the Exalted. Unfortunately, this behaviour is quite common as many muslims follow certain traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, claiming to true servant hood to Allah, the Exalted, yet, abandon the ones which do not appeal to their desires and when they are challenged by others they simply claim the traditions are not obligatory to fulfil. This attitude only indicates their cherry picking attitude. As Allah, the Exalted, judges people based on a person’s intentions which is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Bukhari, number 1, these cherry pickers may find that they are deprived of reward on Judgment Day.

Verse 58 informs muslims that if they submit correctly to Islam they will be forgiven for any sins they may have committed. The verse concludes by reminding muslims that the more they submit to the commands of Islam the more reward, blessings and right guidance they will receive in both worlds. Put simply, a muslim will receive in accordance to their efforts in sincerely obeying Allah, the Exalted.  If they put in little they should not expect allot back. If they strive harder in this obedience then they will receive more back. Chapter 29 Al Ankabut, verse 69:

“And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways…”
