“But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment [i.e., plague] from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 59.
This verse indicates the importance of not compromising on the teachings of Islam in anyway. It is important to understand that no matter what worldly success or blessings one may obtain by compromising they will eventually become a burden for them in this world and a great punishment in the hereafter unless they sincerely repent. This outcome in respect to the world is quite obvious if one observes those who acted in this way. The very things they gained such as fame became a reason for their depression and even suicide. This has been indicated at the end of this verse. Whereas those who remain steadfast on the teachings of Islam may obtain less worldly blessings yet, through the grace and mercy of Allah, the Exalted, they will become a great mercy for them in both worlds. For example, one’s lawfully obtained wealth will fulfil their needs so that they obtain peace of mind and body which in itself is priceless. Whereas, wealth obtained through unlawful means will only increase one’s greed and never seem quite enough. This will deprive them of peace of mind and body. This person is in fact poor even if they possess much wealth.
This verse also indicates the importance of not rearranging the priority list in respect to duties and actions set by Allah, the Exalted, which a muslim must follow. The one who acts in such a way is only following their own desires not the commands of Allah, the Exalted.
Finally the verse also includes those who purposely misinterpret the teachings of Islam in order to fulfil their worldly desires, such as fame. A Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 2654, warns that this person will enter Hell. History has clearly warned that those who chose a path and word other than the path of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, failed in this world and it will lead to failure in the next. The only way to obtain success is to adhere to the teachings of Islam without distorting it.
