PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 59 – PART 2

“But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them….” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 59.

The wrong doers indicated in this verse applies to any disobedience to Allah, the Exalted, by failing to fulfill His commands, refrain from His prohibitions and face destiny with patience. These people may believe they have support from others but due to their disobedience of Allah, the Exalted, their supporters will eventually become their critics. One only needs to review history to observe this fact. Simply put, the one who pleases people by disobeying Allah, the Exalted, will not be protected by people from the punishment of Allah, the Exalted. The other aspect of doing wrong is mistreating other people. The one who mistreats others will find that justice will be established in the hereafter even if they escape it during their lives in this world. This justice may well cause the oppressor to be hurled into Hell. This has been confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 6579. Therefore, one must avoid all forms of wronging for their own sake.

In addition, it is important that a person does not adopt a stubborn mentality as this will prevent any good advice penetrating their heart. An open mind is required before a person can accept and submit to the truth in both religious and worldly matters. One should not adopt the mentality of some who make their minds up beforehand about a matter and then search for evidence to support their belief. If they cannot find any evidence they simply intentionally misinterpret information in order to fit their pre-determined ideals. This was the attitude of many of the non-muslims of Mecca who pre-determined their ideals and only debated with the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, for the sake of argument. Chapter 43 Az Zukhruf, verse 58:

“…They did not present it [i.e., the comparison] except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.”

Allah, the Exalted, covered the hearts of some of the non-muslims of Mecca as they adopted this type of argumentative mentality. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 7:

“Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.”

A muslim should not behave as if they already possess all the answers as this only leads to this bias mentality. This attitude also leads to pride which befits only Allah, the Exalted. As warned in a Hadith found in Sunan Abu Dawud, number 4090, whoever competes with Allah, the Exalted, for pride will be thrown into Hell on Judgement Day.

A muslim should therefore adopt an open mind and accept the truth when it is supported by strong evidence even if it is from someone they dislike. This applies to both worldly and religious matters.
