PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 60 – PART 6 OF 6

“And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, “Strike with your staff the stone.” And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people [i.e., tribe] knew its watering place. “Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 60.

To conclude, this verse reminds muslims that Allah, the Exalted, will provide all the necessities they require in order to survive in this world until they appointed death. In fact, He has guaranteed it many times throughout the Holy Quran. Chapter 11 Hud, verse 6:

“And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision…”

A Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 6748, advises that the provision of the creation was allocated to them over fifty thousand years before Allah, the Exalted, created the Heavens and the Earth. Therefore, muslims should fulfil their side of the arrangement by striving to obtain their provision lawfully as prescribed by Allah, the Exalted. This has been indicated at the end of verse 60 as those who strive to obtain their provision unlawfully often cause corruption on Earth which effects the lives of others, such as drug dealing. This will only increase their sins and punishment in the hereafter if they fail to sincerely repent.

Unfortunately, some muslims are extremely careful in fulfilling the rights of Allah, the Exalted, such as the obligatory prayers, but do not pay enough attention to wronging others. They should note that Allah, the Exalted, is infinitely merciful and readily forgives people whereas the creation are not so merciful. If a victim does not forgive their oppressor justice will be established on Judgment Day where the oppressor’s good deeds will be given to their victim and if necessary the victim’s sins will be given to their oppressor. This may cause the oppressor to be hurled into Hell. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 6579. This oppressor may believe no one can exact revenge for the corruption they cause on Earth. But they will face the consequences of their actions and no authority or social influence will derive them any benefit. As declared in this Hadith even though this oppressor believes they are rich and powerful they are in fact a pauper and their true poverty will manifest itself on Judgment Day.
