PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 61 – PART 11 OF 11

“And [recall] when you said, “O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions.” [Moses] said, “Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked.” And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 61.

To conclude, this verse reminds muslims of the important duty of appreciating the wise choices and decree of Allah, the Exalted, even if they do not observe the wisdom behind them. Many times things occur which appear bad yet, many wisdoms and benefits are derived from them which a person eventually realises. And many times a person desires something believing it is good for them only to realise after it was in fact bad for them. It is important for muslims to understand their extreme short sightedness and limited knowledge and appreciate the infinite knowledge and wisdom of Allah, the Exalted. Therefore, it is foolish to prefer one’s own choice over the choice and decree of Allah, the Exalted. This is choosing what is inferior to what is better which has been indicated in this verse. This is even more absurd than an illiterate person who chooses to prescribe medicine to themself and reject the medicine prescribed by a qualified and experienced doctor. The same way a person would not behave in this manner they should not doubt the choice and decree of Allah, the Exalted. In fact, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has confirmed in a Hadith found in Sahih Muslim, number 7500, that every situation of a believer is good for them as long as they respond correctly to each one. Meaning, patience in times of difficulty and gratitude in times of ease. Allah, the Exalted, chooses the best for His servants even if they do not observe the wisdom in the choice and it is the response of the person which either invites the blessings and mercy of Allah, the Exalted, or invites the anger of Allah, the Exalted, and their humiliation, which has been indicated by this verse. The latter outcome meaning, humiliation occurs in situations when a muslim disobeys Allah, the Exalted, by being impatient in times of difficulties and ungrateful in times of ease. And fails to fulfil His commands and refrain from His prohibitions which has been indicated in the final part of this verse.
