PODTAFSEER: CHAPTER 2 – AL BAQARAH, VERSE 63 – PART 5 OF 5

…Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 63.

To conclude, this verse reminds muslims the importance of sincerely striving in the obedience of Allah, the Exalted. Meaning, to act for His pleasure and His sake  alone. In addition, it indicates the importance of actively striving in fulfilling the commands of Allah, the Exalted, refraining from His prohibitions and facing destiny with patience as true dedication goes beyond merely declaring the teachings of Islam with one’s tongue or only studying them without practically acting on them. One should dedicate the majority of their efforts in this manner as this includes striving in the material world to obtain one’s lawful provision in order to fulfil their necessities and necessities of their dependents. But this true dedication is extremely difficult to do when one exerts effort into obtaining the excess and unnecessary things of this material world. This is because the hereafter and the excess of the material world are opposites. The more one strives for one the further they move away from the other.

True dedication also indicates the importance of not cherry picking the commands of Allah, the Exalted, and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, which coincides with one’s desires. One should instead sincerely strive to fulfil and act on them all according to the hierarchy and priority order set by Allah, the Exalted. It is important to remember these teachings at all times as indicated by verse 63, as one must adhere to them all the time not only when it suits them.

In addition, in order to firmly remember these teachings one should continuously revise and study them. Meaning, it is not good enough to simply study them once. Just like a school student repeatedly revises their notes muslims should consistently revise the teachings of Islam as this is the best way to act on them in all situations especially, when one’s desires encourages them to disobey Allah, the Exalted. Behaving in this manner leads to righteousness which has been declared at the end of verse 63.
