“And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson for those who fear Allah.” Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 66.
To conclude the discussion on verse 66, it is important for muslims to study the past nations in order to adopt the fear of Allah, the Exalted, and hope in His mercy. This balance is extremely important as when one reviews the disobedience of the past nations and their punishment it creates the fear of Allah, the Exalted, which is an important deterrent from committing sins. And when one observes the obedient servants of the past nations and how they were blessed by Allah, the Exalted, it inspires hope in the mercy of Allah, the Exalted, which in turn encourages one to fulfil their duties towards Allah, the Exalted, and people.
In addition, it is important for muslims to not only learn from the past nations but be observant in respect to the people in their own time. One of the purposes of being placed with people on Earth is to observe their behaviour and the consequences of their actions in order to learn from them so that one improves their own character and obedience to Allah, the Exalted. For example, when one observes certain celebrities who misuse their wealth, social status and sell their modesty and decency for the sake of fame and how they end up lonely, depressed and even suicidal it should warn muslims not to follow their habits and behaviour. Muslims should also observe the countless people who are suffering all around the globe which should inspire them to be grateful to Allah, the Exalted, by using the blessings their possess in the correct way as prescribed by Islam and it should inspire them to help the needy according to their means. One should never be so self-absorbed that they fail to take notice of these things and instead behave as if the universe revolves around them. This heedlessness causes one to miss out on fulfilling one of the purposes of why humanity has been placed together on this Earth as Allah, the Exalted, was more than capable of creating and placing humans separate from one another thereby testing them in a different way.
