PodThought: A Firm Foundation

I had a thought, which I wanted to share. A core principle of Islam that serves individuals in both their secular and spiritual lives is the importance of grounding one’s actions in clear evidence and knowledge. This approach enables individuals to make informed decisions, allowing them to navigate various circumstances while achieving a sense of tranquillity.

In matters of faith, individuals should align their actions with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. It is essential to refrain from relying on other sources of religious knowledge, as they may lead one away from these primary guides. Such alternative knowledge often lacks a solid foundation and is frequently the result of human fabrication. This concern is echoed in a Hadith recorded in Sunan Abu Dawud, number 4606, where the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, cautions that anything not grounded in the teachings of the Holy Quran and his traditions will be rejected by Allah, the Exalted.

In worldly matters, it is crucial that the knowledge guiding one’s actions is based on reliable evidence, such as scientific research. For instance, individuals should only use medications that have been rigorously studied and have passed clinical trials to demonstrate their efficacy in treating specific health conditions.

Just as an individual may be deemed foolish for relying on worldly knowledge that lacks a solid evidential foundation, so too will someone who neglects to act upon Islamic teachings from the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, while instead following unreliable religious sources, will find themselves misled and deceived. This person may adopt peculiar beliefs that lead to superstitious behaviours and irrational fears, creating illogical connections between actions and outcomes. For instance, a Muslim might engage in spiritual practices with the hope of conceiving a child, despite the fact that such practices have no legitimate link to childbirth from either an Islamic or worldly perspective. If one continues to disregard knowledge that is substantiated by evidence, they risk developing bizarre notions about Allah, the Exalted, and creation, including beliefs in supernatural entities, which could ultimately jeopardize their faith. Therefore, it is imperative to eschew such misguided behaviour and to ground all actions in clear evidence, whether derived from the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, or, in worldly matters, based on empirical evidence such as scientific research.
