I had a thought, which I wanted to share. People, especially muslims, often avoid reflecting over or discussing the inevitable reality of death as they feel it will prevent them from enjoying lawful worldly things and induce constant sadness. This is a trick of the Devil who encourages this attitude as he desires people not to achieve peace of mind in both worlds. In reality, the one who reflects over death in the correct way will be encouraged to prepare for it. This preparation involves correctly using the blessings they have been granted as outlined in Islamic teachings. This will ensure they obtain a balanced mental and physical state and correctly place everything and everyone within their life while adequately preparing for their accountability on the Day of Judgement. This behaviour will therefore lead to peace of mind in both worlds. Whereas, the one who avoids reflecting over death will inevitably fail to practically prepare for it. They will therefore, misuse the blessings they have been granted. Consequently, they will experience an imbalance in their mental and physical well-being and misplace everything and everyone within their life while failing to prepare adequately for their accountability on the Day of Judgement. This will result in stress and challenges in both this life and the next, despite any material comforts they may enjoy.
In addition, correctly reflecting over death can also encourage one to remain steadfast on the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, as death is the end of the test of life in this world and leads to everlasting reward. This encouragement to remain steadfast is similar to a university student who looks forward to their graduation ceremony in order to encourage them to remain firm on their studies.
Finally, reflecting on death will belittle the difficulties one is facing in this world, as every worldly difficultly is small compared to the reality of death and the lifting of the veil which separates people from the unseen world. Belittling the difficulties one faces in this manner will encourage them to remain patient. Patience involves avoiding complaining with one’s speech or actions and remaining firm on the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, believing He only chooses what is best for them, even if this is not obvious to them. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 216:
“…But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.”
Therefore, reflecting over death can be useful in aiding one to obtaining peace of mind in both worlds and must therefore not be avoided while falsely believing it only gives rise to sadness. Otherwise, one will lose out on the benefits of correctly reflecting over death and fail to practically prepare for it. As discussed earlier, this will prevent them from obtaining peace of mind in both worlds.
