PodThought: Religion of Feelings

I had a thought, which I wanted to share. Due to the rise of social media and its relentless efforts to encourage people to always live according to their feelings, many muslims have approached the teachings of Islam according to their feelings. Meaning, when they feel like obeying Allah, the Exalted, which involves correctly using the blessings they have been granted, they do so. But when they do not feel like acting like a muslim, they disobey Allah, the Exalted. The one who behaves in this manner is not following Islam. In reality, they have adopted their feelings as their religion and way of life, even if they verbally claim belief in Allah, the Exalted. It is therefore important to understand that Islam is a complete code of conduct which must be implemented in all aspects of one’s life and in every situation they face. It must therefore not be treated like a coat which one can put on and taken off according to their desires. The one who behaves in this manner is only worshipping their desires even if they claim otherwise. Chapter 25 Al Furqan, verse 43:

“Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire?…”

As Islam literally means submission to Allah, the Exalted, one cannot submit to Him and to their own desires at the same time. Mixing the two only causes one to create a religion and way of life which deviates from Islam. This self-designed religion and way of life will not be accepted by Allah, the Exalted, in this world or in the next. Chapter 3 Alee Imran, verse 85:

“And whoever desires other than Islam as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.”

There is a big difference between committing sins while trying to sincerely obey Allah, the Exalted, and adopting a lifestyle whereby one mixes submission to Allah, the Exalted, and submission to their own desires. This attitude will lead to loss in this world as misusing the blessings they have been granted will lead them to an unbalanced mental and physical state and it will cause them to misplace everything and everyone within their life. This will prevent them from achieving peace of mind. Their attitude will also prevent them from adequately preparing for their accountability on the Day of Judgement. This person will therefore lose in this world and in the next, even if they enjoy some worldly luxuries.  Chapter 9 At Tawbah, verse 82:

“So let them laugh a little and [then] weep much as recompense for what they used to earn.”
