PodThought: Worldly Faiths

I had a thought, which I wanted to share. One of the major things which separates Islam from all other faiths and ways of life is that it is not a transactional religion. This is when one serves their God or Gods only for the sake of obtaining a worldly thing, such as a child or wealth. Islam however invites people to recognise their position as the creation and servants of Allah, the Exalted, and to fulfil their purpose. Even though Islam does offer worldly benefits, such as achieving peace of mind when one correctly uses the blessings they have been granted as outlined in Islamic teachings, none the less, this is a bonus rather than the ultimate aim of Islam. This is the reason why Islam does not aim to attract people into accepting Islam through offering worldly benefits, unlike other religions. Instead, it presents the truthfulness of Islam through clear evidence and invites people to fulfil their purpose in this world so that they live a meaningful and purposeful existence that leads to peace of mind in both worlds. Sadly, many muslims have adopted the wrong mentality whereby they approach Islam in a transactional way. For example, muslims will perform certain good deeds with the intention of gaining worldly things, such as a child or wealth. They treat the treasury of Allah, the Exalted, as a shop of worldly items which can purchased in exchange for good deeds and spiritual exercises. One must avoid this attitude as they do not what is good for them and as a result, they may pursue worldly things which are bad for them. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 216:

“…But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.”

In addition, the one who performs good deeds for the sake of worldly things will not gain reward from Allah, the Exalted, as He only rewards people for the good things they do in order to please Him. This has been warned in a Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 3154.

Finally, the one who adopts a transactional belief with Allah, the Exalted, will inevitably disobey Him whenever they do not obtain the worldly things they worship Him for. This will cause them to misuse the blessings they have been granted. As a result they will obtain an unbalanced mental and physical state, they will misplace everything and everyone within their life and fail to adequately prepare for their accountability on the Day of Judgement. This will lead to stress, trouble and difficulties in both worlds, even if they enjoy some worldly luxuries. This person will not achieve peace of mind in this world or in the next. The true loser, even if they do not realize it. Chapter 22 Al Hajj, verse 11:

“And of the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.”

And chapter 18 Al Kahf, verses 103-104:

“Say, “Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds? [They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.””
