I had a thought, which I wanted to share. Islam instructs individuals that the highest status one can achieve in both worlds is that of a servant of Allah, the Exalted. Frequently, when Allah, the Exalted, speaks about the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, He often refers to them as His servants. For example, in the following verse, Allah, the Exalted, speaks of the Heavenly journey of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, which stands as evidence of his greatness, yet He refers to Him as His servant. Chapter 17 Al Isra, verse 1:
“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”
In another instance, Allah, the Exalted, refers to the instructor of one of the most revered Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, the Holy Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, simply as a servant among His servants, without even naming the instructor. Chapter 18 Al Kahf, verses 64-65:
“[Moses] said, “That is what we were seeking.” So they returned, following their footprints. And they found a servant from among Our servants to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.”
Even the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, introduced himself to the world as a servant of Allah, the Exalted, before declaring his Prophethood and Messengership. This is supported by numerous Hadiths, including one found in Sahih Muslim, number 851. Indeed, the essence of Prophethood and Messengership is fundamentally based on servitude to Allah, the Exalted.
Furthermore, humans are intrinsically created to serve something or someone. It is impossible for a human to exist without being in a position of servitude. One should therefore choose to serve Allah, the Exalted, which leads to tranquility and success in both this life and the hereafter, as He alone governs the spiritual hearts of individuals, the abode of peace of mind, thereby determining who experiences peace and who does not. Chapter 53 An Najm, verse 43:
“And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep.”
Moreover, obeying Allah, the Exalted, promotes both mental and physical tranquility, as individuals will concentrate solely on pleasing Him in their everyday lives. Serving one master is considerably simpler than serving multiple masters, especially when that Master is Most Merciful and demands only minimal effort from His servant. In contrast, those who reject servitude to Allah, the Exalted, will inevitably find themselves serving other entities or individuals, such as their employers, societal norms, social media, fashion, and culture. Even more harmful is when one becomes enslaved to their own desires, exhibiting the worst characteristics of humanity, similar to rapists and murderers. Such individuals will endeavour to satisfy their masters, which leads them to misuse the blessings they have received. Consequently, they will find themselves in an unbalanced mental and physical condition, misplacing everything and everyone in their lives, and inadequately preparing for their accountability on the Day of Judgement. This situation will result in stress, challenges, and hardships in both realms, even if they experience certain worldly luxuries. This truth becomes evident when observing those who reject the servitude of Allah, the Exalted, and the wretched existence they endure, even when they possess the entire world. Chapter 9 At Tawbah, verse 82:
“So let them laugh a little and [then] weep much as recompense for what they used to earn.”
Chapter 20 Taha, verses 124-126:
“And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” He will say, “My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?” [Allāh] will say, “Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten.””
Moreover, serving others, such as employers or family members, will inevitably lead to unhappiness, as no matter how much effort is put forth, one can never completely satisfy others. This is an undeniable truth. As a result, the individual who dedicates themselves to serving others will gradually become resentful and dissatisfied, as their efforts to please others do not bring about fulfilment. This situation will only intensify their stress, anxiety, and difficulties in both worlds.
Therefore, since servitude is inescapable, every person should practice self-compassion and choose to serve Allah, the Exalted, instead of other entities, as this decision alone promotes peace and success in both worlds. Therefore, it is imperative for individuals to strive to become true servants of Allah, the Exalted. This involves using the blessings He has granted them in ways that are pleasing to Him, as outlined in the Holy Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. It is vital to recognize that a servant understands their duty to continually seek the pleasure of their Master, Allah, the Exalted. Their obligation is not to chase after personal satisfaction or the approval of others. They do not seek the favour of others but instead motivate others to aspire for the pleasure of Allah, the Exalted, just as they strive to do, since all of creation are servants of Allah, the Exalted, whether they willingly accept this fact or not. Moreover, a servant of Allah, the Exalted, realizes that everything they possess was created and granted to them by none other than their Master, Allah, the Exalted, and thus belongs to Him, including their very existence. This understanding will consequently inspire them to use the blessings they have received in ways that are pleasing to the Owner of these blessings, Allah, the Exalted, which ultimately leads to peace and success in both worlds through obtaining a balanced mental and physical state and by correctly placing everything and everyone within their life. Chapter 16 An Nahl, verse 97:
“Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer – We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.”
And chapter 5 Al Ma’idah, verses 15-16:
“…There has come to you from Allāh a light and a clear Book. By which Allāh guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace and brings them out from darknesses into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.”
