The next major sin is to miss an obligatory fast without a valid reason. In fact this is so serious that the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, warned in a Hadith found in Sunan Abu Dawud, number 2396, that if a muslim does not complete an obligatory fast without a valid religious reason they will not be able to completely make up for it even if they fasted every day for their entire life. A valid excuse includes being so sick that if one fasted it would make them worse. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 184:
“[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] – then an equal number of other days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] – a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers good [i.e., excess] – it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.”
The next major sin is unfortunately quite common amongst people nowadays namely, failing to complete the obligatory Holy Pilgrimage when one is able to do so. These are the people who are obliged to perform it and are in a situation where they can yet, unnecessarily delay it. Chapter 3 Alee Imran, verse 97:
“…And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way…”
The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has given a severe warning in a Hadith found in Jami A Tirmidhi, number 812, that if a muslim is in a position to perform their obligatory Holy Pilgrimage and fails to then they might as well die as a non-muslim.
Unfortunately, muslims often delay this important duty with poor excuses not understanding how serious it is.
