I had a thought, which I wanted to share. It is essential to recognize the virtuous conduct of those who earnestly seek to follow the commands of Allah, the Exalted, by appropriately utilizing the blessings bestowed upon them as described in Islamic teachings, thereby allowing one to imitate their commendable character. One must steer clear of two extreme perspectives when observing the righteous to avoid falling into misguidance.
One extreme perspective involves diminishing the status of the righteous, including the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, out of ignorance, mistakenly thinking that such actions elevate the greatness of Allah, the Exalted. In reality, this attitude undermines the respect necessary to emulate the virtuous qualities of these individuals, as it is impossible to imitate the character of someone who is not held in high regard.
The second extreme perspective involves elevating the status of the righteous beyond what is prescribed in the teachings of the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. This perspective leads individuals to perceive the righteous as angelic figures rather than as human beings whose qualities can and should be emulated. It is impossible to emulate someone with whom one cannot relate. By raising the status of the righteous beyond the boundaries established by Islamic teachings, individuals are hindered from relating to them, which in turn obstructs their ability to adopt the righteous’ admirable traits, as they may perceive such traits as unattainable. Consequently, rather than actively following the righteous, individuals may only engage in discussions about their elevated status and virtuous attributes. This can lead to the misconception that merely verbally extolling the righteous suffices for attaining proper guidance in life, even if one does not actively strive to embody their commendable qualities. While it may be true that one cannot attain the exalted status of the righteous, such as that of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, it remains essential for each individual to strive to realize their own potential by emulating the virtuous qualities of the righteous, rather than limiting themselves to mere verbal admiration.
It is essential to steer clear of both extremes and to regard the righteous in accordance with Islamic teachings. This approach will foster respect for them, enabling individuals to emulate their virtuous traits, while recognizing them as human beings whose admirable qualities are worthy of imitation, rather than perceiving them as angelic figures who are unattainable in practice.
